Eating: Philly Cheesesteak, Pizza, and Pierogies

Well, you can’t go to Philadelphia and not eat a Philly Cheesesteak! It was out first meal when we got there and I think I actually like the chicken version better.

Then, of course, we also had tons of pizza. The Ziti pizza was so good! Last time I splurged on pizza like that was the day before my marathon. Hmm… maybe I should go for a run.

The fiance’s mom is actually of Polish ancestry, so while at his family home, we had tons of Polish food, especially for Christmas, but my favorite is the pierogi, a type of potato filled dumpling.

Running: Pennsylvania

I told you there would be a running post soon! It’s a short one, but my runs have also been really short lately. I’ve been trying to get back into it, but it’s been really hard to do even just 2 miles. It’s been dark and cold, so I have been going to the gym a couple of times a week. So happy “Fitness for 10” opened a space downtown! It’s very convenient.

I’m also glad to write that I was able to get outside and run and couple of miles while in Pennsylvania for the holidays. It was cold and wet, but at least I went outside!

It felt so good that when I got back to Reno I ran by the river even though it was icy and cold. I am running up to 4 miles at a time now!

Engagement and Christmas Party

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

We celebrated our engagement with a Christmas party in December. As always, good food, good drinks, and good friends. The fiance made a ham and we toasted to a new beginning. I also loved the dress he got me. He knows I hate shopping, so he picked a few dresses at the mall and brought them home for me to choose three as a Christmas gift. He did great!

But the fun didn’t stop here, when we got to the fiance’s parents home, they had an engagement cake waiting for us!

Eating: More Fall in Reno

Fall is over, but we had a lot of fun!

No wonder I’ve been gaining weight: I started going thru the pictures of some of the food of the last couple of months and there were lots of them! Let’s get started with some of the things I cooked: a tomato spinach pasta (recipe from the pasta box!), a gluten free pizza with turkey pepperoni, sauteed chuchu/chayote (the Brazilian squash the fiance loved), chicken stroganoff (Mom’s recipe with table cream), Shepherd’s pie (I made my own real mashed potatoes!), and Christmas cookies (MN family’s recipe). Fall was also a pumpkin pie festival: I made them with evaporated milk, condensed milk, and even cream cheese (the best!).

As for restaurants, I continued going to my favorites (“Great Full Gardens“, “Brasserie St. James“, and “The Seed“), went to a few I had been before (paella at “Fuego“, “Midtown Eats” with B. and her friends, “Chez Louie“, which is inside the museum, etc.), and tried a few new ones. I’m sure there were even more places we ate at, but when my phone got stolen I lost a few pictures, such as the one from “Pho Restaurant“.

I really liked the ambiance at “Coffeebar” which is a coffee shop that serves pastries, salads, and wine. For sushi we went to “Tha Joint” and “Ijji III“, both good. In the casinos we tried “Roxy’s” (not a big fan of casinos…) and downtown we had a drink and played jenga at “1864 Tavern“. My favorite new places are “Uncork’d” in Midtown for its outdoor dining and lots of wine choices, and “Paulie’s” for an amazing New York pizza.

There were also a couple of fine dining spots we went to in December: for M.’s birthday we ate at “Johnny’s Ristorante Italiano“, where we had a family meal with eggplant parmesan and lots of pasta, and for our annual Tahoe Christmas Party we went to “Soule Domain” again (I have to remember to order the lamb again next year!).

More: Thanksgiving 2014

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Another successful thanksgiving dinner full of friends, food, drinks, games, and fun. Over 20 people showed up and we still managed to have a sit-down dinner, with mulled wine, spiked apple cider, roasted pepper soup, and lots of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and desserts. I’m still so full…

More: We’re engaged!

I know, I know… Not much running lately, but I’ve been pretty busy with some other things happening in my life 😉 Don’t worry, there will be some running news soon.

We're engaged!

We’re engaged!

The boyfriend is now officially the fiance! We had an incredible anniversary together: we slept in, had pizza (my favorite food) for lunch, watched “The Hunger Games” movie at the exact day/time of last year’s “The Hunger Games” (our first date), shot some arrows (representing another “Hunger Games” movie – our second date), and went on a sunset hike to the top of Huffaker Hills, where he proposed after we watched some of the planes taking off against the Reno skyline.

Later we had a celebration dinner at this awesome French restaurant by the river: “Beaujolais“. We had cocktails, wine, champagne, venison, stuffed rabbit, and much more.

More: Aunt Val

It’s been one month since Tia Valdiza passed away. It’s been one really tough month. Aunt Val had been living with my family for over 30 years. She never married or had kids. We were her family and her commitment to raising me, my brother, and my sister, was beyond words. She was not only my dear aunt, but my first grade teacher, who taught me to read and write, my roommate for 15 years, who read to me and tucked me in every night, and, most of all,  one of the biggest inspirations in my life.

October just kept getting worse: my purse got stolen, with my phone and several important items inside, and a girl rear-ended me, giving me a concussion that left me tired and dizzy for days. All of that made my life suck even more, but none of it could be compared to the loss of my aunt, from which I’m still recovering.

In the midst of all the craziness, I started a yoga teacher training course. We have been reading this yoga philosophy book called “The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” that talks about how to live in a more meaningful way and I realized that’s what my aunt was trying to teach us all along. She was selfless. She lived for us, giving us everything she had, and she was by far the happiest person in my family. She lived in the moment. One of the advice she gave the boyfriend when he was in Brazil this summer was to stop worrying about a job he would have to take care of in the future and enjoy the present time with my family. She was strong, positive, and not easily overwhelmed by life. She took what life gave her, threw away what didn’t serve her, didn’t dwell on mistakes, and only kept the good, always keeping her calm and grace along the way.

On my first reading of this yoga book, I kept thinking about how unattainable that kind of philosophy was for a regular human being, but now, thinking about my aunt’s life, I can see she was the best example of  how to live your life with a peaceful mind. Right now, with all the lemons life has been throwing at me,  it’s been hard putting what she was trying to teach us into practice, but I’m working on making her proud. I am unbelievably grateful I got to know Aunt Val, my greatest teacher.

More: Slick and Parker’s 10th Birthday and Halloween

I had a three-part birthday and the boyfriend had a surprise party and a 20’s theme party, so I also had to celebrate the dogs’ birthday in style. Since it was October, they had a Halloween themed party for their 10th birthday (70 in dog years)!!!

I was a Hawaiian, the boyfriend was a green M&M, and the dogs wore UNR shirts, making them college students. We repeated the outfits on October 31st as well to pass out candy to the trick-or-treaters. Definitely the highlight of my awful month (more on that to come…)

Happy birthday Parker and Slick!

Eating: Seafood Paella

A couple of weeks ago I finally used the saffron I bought in Spain 5 years ago to make a seafood paella. I made brown rice with garlic, onions, tomatoes, and a tablespoon of saffron, and then at the end added a frozen seafood mix we had gotten from Costco. Super easy and delicious, although it turned out more like a risotto when I accidentally let some of the water from the cover back into the pan.

Seafood Paella

4 cups of brown rice

8 cups of water

1/2 onion, chopped

4 cloves of garlic, minced

1 can diced tomatoes

1 tbsp saffron

Olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

1 lb frozen seafood mix

Saute onions and garlic in olive oil. Add water, rice, tomatoes, saffron, salt, and pepper. Bring it to a boil. Simmer, covered, for about 45 minutes. Add frozen seafood and cook for another 10 minutes. It makes SEVERAL servings!

Then last weekend we had a real homemade paella at a gourmet dinner we went to. Our hosts had not only a paella pan, but a paella circular burner to make sure the rice caramelized evenly. They added shrimp and scallops and paired the dish with a Pinot Noir. They also had several gourmet salts that I didn’t even know existed! For appetizers we had guacamole made with roasted avocado and veggies, a tomato/minestrone soup with figs, margaritas and white wine. For dessert, it was a delicious pear tart with blue cheese. Yummmm!

Eating: Napa, California

Napa is known for its wineries, but its food was the center stage of our trip there last weekend. Following my friend V.’s recommendation, we went to this indoor public market called “Oxbowl“. With so many places to eat, we couldn’t decide and ended up having three lunches in two hours: oysters at “Hog Island Oyster Co.“, duck tacos at “C Casa” and mushroom pizza at “The Kitchen Door“. Everything was paired with wine, of course. In the afternoon we walked around downtown, where they were having a Cajun Festival, but were too full to try their grilled oysters. Later in the evening, our host D. went to “Napkins” with us, a delicious restaurant (bison sliders!) that turns into a lounge at night. On our way back to Reno, we found time to eat even more, stopping in San Francisco to have breakfast at “The Ramp” with my friend J.
